An important feature of the traditional government in West Africa was the Council of Elders. The Council of Elders was made up of respected and experienced men who were responsible for making important decisions in the community. They were the custodians of the customs, traditions, and laws of the community and played an important role in resolving disputes and maintaining peace and order. They were also responsible for the selection and installation of chiefs and other leaders in the community. The Council of Elders was highly regarded and their decisions were respected by all members of the community.
