From the words or group of words lettered A to D, choose the word or group of words that best completes each of the following sentences.
Highlights _____ the events will be televised today.
Antwoorddetails
The correct option to fill in the blank is "of". "Highlights of the events" means the most important or interesting parts of the events. Therefore, the sentence is saying that these important parts will be televised. The preposition "of" is used to indicate that the televised portion is a selection or summary of the events, rather than the events themselves.
Vraag 3 Verslag
From the words or group of words lettered A to D, choose the word or group of words that best completes each of the following sentences.
The student did the assignment, but not _____ the way I had expected.
Antwoorddetails
The sentence is expressing that the student completed the assignment, but not in the way the speaker had anticipated. The blank space requires a word that describes the degree of how different the student's approach was from the speaker's expectation. - "Just" would imply that the student's approach was very similar to the speaker's expectation. - "Quite" would imply that the student's approach was somewhat different from the speaker's expectation. - "Hardly" would imply that the student's approach was almost completely different from the speaker's expectation. - "As" would require a comparison to something else to complete the sentence, and without additional context, it is not clear what that comparison should be. Therefore, the best option would be "quite" because it suggests a degree of difference while not being as extreme as "hardly."
Vraag 4 Verslag
The governor filed an _______ against the ruling of the tribunal.
Antwoorddetails
In this sentence, the word "against" indicates that the governor is challenging or opposing the ruling of the tribunal. The word that would best fit in the blank is "appeal." An appeal is a legal request made by a party to a higher court to review and possibly overturn a decision made by a lower court or administrative agency. In this case, the governor is filing an appeal against the ruling of the tribunal, which means that they are asking a higher court to review the decision and potentially reverse or modify it. An injunction is a court order that requires a person or organization to stop doing something or to take a specific action. An objection is a formal expression of disapproval or opposition to something. An application is a formal request for something, such as a job or a permit. While these words are also used in legal contexts, they do not accurately describe the action that the governor is taking in this sentence.

Their shop stocks _____ overwhelming variety of goods.
Antwoorddetails

The sentence describes the variety of goods available at a shop, which is described as "overwhelming." The word "overwhelming" means that there are so many goods available that it's difficult to choose or decide. Therefore, we need an article that describes the noun "variety" in a singular form, and the appropriate article in this context is "an". The options "any," "every," and "each" are not appropriate in this context because they are not used to describe a singular noun, but rather they are used to describe a general or indefinite reference to a group of nouns. Therefore, they do not accurately convey the meaning intended by the sentence.

The correct option for the sentence "It's a miracle that the child didn't die after the illness, _____?" is: isn't it. The sentence expresses surprise that the child survived an illness that was potentially life-threatening. The phrase that can fit in the blank space should be a statement that reinforces this sense of surprise and seeks agreement or confirmation from the listener. Out of the four options provided, "isn't it" best fits this description. "Isn't it" is a common phrase used to seek agreement or confirmation from the listener, especially in situations where the speaker is surprised or impressed by something. In this case, the speaker is expressing amazement at the child's survival and is seeking agreement or confirmation from the listener that it is indeed miraculous that the child did not die. The other options do not fit the context of the sentence as well as "isn't it." "Did she" and "didn't she" suggest a question about the child's survival, rather than a statement of surprise. SECTION A: ESSAY
The National Scholarship Secretariat is organising an essay competition on the topic: The menace of fake drugs in the society. Write your entry.
Fake drugs have become a major problem in our society today, and it is important that we take steps to address this issue. The production, distribution, and sale of counterfeit drugs have had devastating effects on individuals, families, and the healthcare system as a whole.
One of the most significant consequences of fake drugs is the negative impact they can have on a person's health. These counterfeit drugs often do not contain the correct active ingredients or may contain harmful substances that can cause serious harm or even death. This is particularly dangerous when it comes to life-saving medications such as antibiotics, antimalarials, and other essential drugs. People who take these counterfeit medications may not receive the treatment they need and may suffer from prolonged illnesses or even worsen their condition.
Furthermore, fake drugs have economic consequences. The use of counterfeit medications leads to wastage of resources and results in a loss of revenue for legitimate pharmaceutical companies. Also, the need to treat illnesses caused by fake drugs adds to the already high costs of healthcare. This burden falls heavily on the less privileged who may not be able to afford the expensive treatment options.
To combat this menace, it is important for governments and regulatory bodies to implement stricter laws and regulations on the production, distribution, and sale of drugs. This includes harsher penalties for offenders involved in the production and distribution of fake drugs. Pharmaceutical companies must also increase their efforts to ensure the authenticity of their products by using better technology for packaging and labeling, and increasing public awareness about the dangers of fake drugs.
In conclusion, the menace of fake drugs in our society is a serious issue that needs to be addressed with urgency. We must all work together to ensure that the production, distribution, and sale of counterfeit drugs are eliminated. The health and wellbeing of our citizens, as well as the economy of our country, depend on it.

We hope that you will take these concerns into consideration as you settle into your new role. We look forward to working with you to make our school the best it can be.
Thank you.

SECTION C: SUMMARY
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.
Armed robbery is one of the most condemnable crimes in contemporary society. People have been maimed or killed for their money or belongings in the past, but never has robbery with violence been experienced on such a large scale as observed recently. Armed robbery is typically motivated by tin desire to obtain
money and valuables. However, some armed robbers engage in the crime with the intention of boosting their status. Whatever the motivation, the act is inhumane and can result in injury and sometimes the death of the victims.
It is rather unfortunate that in almost all modem societies there are always groups of unemployed young people. Some are unemployable because they have little or no education and lack skills. What is even worse, these young people are often unprepared for and unwilling to do any manual work to earn an honest living. They tend to blame society for their plight and retaliate by indulging in acts of crime and lawlessness. They grab money and valuable properties of their victim to enable them to survive in a society which seems to ignore them. To reduce the instances of armed robbery, parents should do their best to nurture their children in the right way because charity begins at home. They should instil good values in them and should not hesitate to correct them early in life when they bring home something that does not belong to them.
The rich, on the other hand, who are mostly the target of armed robbers provide another cause. Some show off their wealth ostentatiously, live flamboyantly, go about in flashy and sophisticated cars, hop from one exotic island to another on holidays, and brag about all their escapades on social media much to the annoyance and envy of the unemployed youth. To bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots, the government should provide tile basic necessities for its Citizens. Social services should be made available to those without jobs. The provision of such amenities to cater for the entire populace would help to improve the living conditions of the unemployed and underemployed. The adequate provision of infrastructure would ensure that every individual has access to the basio comforts of life.
The breakdown of traditional systems, resulting in the loss of moral and spiritual values, has made wealth the only thing of value in the eyes of the youth. The ostentatious display of ill-gotten wealth is applauded and the society hardly questions its source. Many young people therefore engage in all manner of nefarious
activities including armed robbery to make money in order to enjoy the delights and comforts of modern life and above all, be celebrated by their society. Law enforcement authorities can further reduce the spate of armed robberies by monitoring places known for high incidence of the crime. Constant and intrusive patrols of crime-prone areas can deter potential offenders.
(b) In three sentences, one for each, summarize how armed robbery can be reduced.
Armed robbery can be reduced by nurturing children with good values and correcting them when they bring home something that does not belong to them. The government should provide basic necessities and social services to the unemployed to bridge the gap between the haves and have-nots. Law enforcement authorities can deter potential offenders by monitoring high incidence areas with constant and intrusive patrols.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.
Alani was the seventh child of his family. When he was growing up, there was scarcely enough to go round. His mother was a petty trader while his father worked as a clerk in one of the ministries. But Alani was an intelligent child and performed brilliantly at school. This endeared him to his teachers. He represented the school at all competitions and won many laurels, While he was in Basic Six, he won a scholarship to study at any school of his choice to university level. The future was indeed bright for him. However, having to constantly struggle with his siblings for the little sustenance provided by
their parents turned him into an aggressive child.
After graduation, Alani got a job with a reputable accounting firm. He travelled far and wide and was trained extensively. He rose through the ranks and became one of the top executives. After a while, he decided to establish his own firm. His firm flourished because of his hard work, dedication and the huge amount of money and time he invested in the venture. After just a few years, the firm became a household name. However, things took a bad turn. Alani's success went to his head. He became pompous. He would get angry at the slightest provocation. He refused to take the advice of his employees, considering them all beneath him. Even when his workers had good suggestions for improvement, he would not listen. Often times, he would treat even his clients shabbily. He began to lose clients one by one and his profits dwindled. His firm was on the rocks and he started to blame his employees for the downturn in his business. He became suspici6us of every move made and action taken by his workers. Soon, Alani became a bitter man. He lost the respect of his workers because he often quarrelled with them.
However, Alani's secretary, who was his pioneer staff, did not give up on him. She tried to talk to him and refused to resign when other members of staff were putting in their letters. When five of his workers resigned on the same day, that decided it! He realized that he just had to turn his life around.
He went for counselling and began to turn over a new leaf. It was during one of the counselling sessions that he met a business mogul. They got talking and the man was impressed with Alani's knowledge and expertise. They formed a partnership and Alani's business began to grow again. Alani had leant a useful lesson: those who are endowed with success should nurture it with humility.
(a) What endeared Alani to his teachers?

(d) What was ironical in Alani's blaming his employees for the downturn in his business?
The irony in Alani blaming his employees for the downturn in his business is that he was the one who became arrogant and refused to listen to their suggestions for improvement. He had become so full of himself and dismissive of others that he failed to see that the problem was with his own behavior and management style. He treated his employees poorly and disregarded their ideas, which led to a decrease in client satisfaction and a loss of business. So, it's ironic that he would blame his employees for the problems he caused himself.

Congratulatory Message On The School's 60th Anniversary Celebration
On behalf of the alumni and former senior prefects of our school, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you and the entire school community on the occasion of the school's anniversary celebration. The success of this event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, and it is a clear indication that our school continues to thrive under your leadership.
As a former senior prefect of the school, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the progress and development that have taken place over the years. However, I also recognize that there is always room for improvement, and I would like to offer three suggestions for ways in which we can continue to build on our successes and further improve the school:
1. Enhancing extracurricular activities: While our school has always placed a strong emphasis on academics, I believe that we can do more to provide students with opportunities to develop their talents and interests outside of the classroom. By investing in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, drama, and community service, we can help students become well-rounded individuals who are better prepared for the challenges of the world beyond school.
2. Improving infrastructure: Although the school has made significant strides in improving its facilities in recent years, there are still areas that require attention. For example, the library could benefit from additional resources, and some classrooms could use new equipment and furniture. By investing in these areas, we can create a more conducive learning environment that promotes student engagement and success.
3. Strengthening community partnerships: Our school is fortunate to have a strong and supportive community, and I believe that we can do more to leverage these relationships for the benefit of our students. By forging partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations, we can provide students with opportunities to gain real-world experience and connect with potential employers or mentors.
Once again, I would like to congratulate you on this milestone anniversary and thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of the school. I look forward to seeing how we can continue to work together to improve and enhance the school for future generations.
Yours sincerely,

Write a story illustrates the saying: Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.
Once upon a time, there was a great king who ruled over a vast kingdom. He was loved by his people for his just and fair rule. However, the king's life was not as easy as it seemed. The king was constantly worried about the safety and well-being of his kingdom and his people. He always had to make difficult decisions that affected the lives of thousands of people. He was always concerned about his enemies, both within and outside his kingdom.
One day, the king's closest advisor told him a story about a former king who had been overthrown by his own people. The advisor warned the king that his position as king was not secure and that he needed to be constantly vigilant. The king was troubled by this and could not sleep well at night. He knew that he had to be careful and watchful to protect his kingdom and his throne.
The king's worries and fears increased over time, and he became more and more anxious. He could not trust anyone, not even his own family members. He had to constantly look over his shoulder, fearing an attack from his enemies. He had to deal with corruption and disloyalty among his own officials. He became a prisoner of his own power.
The king realized that the saying "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown" was true. The weight of his responsibilities as king was too heavy for him to bear. He longed for the simple life he had before he became a king. But he knew that he could not abandon his people, and he had to continue to lead them and protect them, no matter how difficult it was.
In the end, the king passed away, worn out by the burden of his responsibilities. His people mourned him, and they realized that being a king was not an easy task. They knew that they had to choose their future kings wisely and support them in their rule. The legacy of the great king lived on, but his story reminded everyone that power and responsibility come at a great cost.

(a) In three sentences, one for each, summarize the factors that make some youths go into armed robbery.
Some youths go into armed robbery due to lack of employment opportunities, inadequate provision of basic necessities by the government, and the breakdown of traditional systems leading to the loss of moral and spiritual values. They may engage in the crime to obtain money and valuables, or to boost their status. Additionally, the display of wealth by the rich can also create feelings of envy and resentment among unemployed youth.
